Week 2: 2D-Design & Laser Cutting
Fusion360 Preparation
To brush up on Fusion 360, I first did a couple YouTube tutorials that focused on sketching and extruding forms. In the first tutorial, I created the first section of what looks like a lid with a box. Using another tutorial from the first HTMAA recitation, I started sketching pieces of what could become a laser cut press kit.
Laser Cut Press Kit
For the press kit, Sol Lewitt’s cubic sculptures inspired me to construct a modular, orthogonal structure that can take multiple shapes. His art practice is compelling in part because he often wrote detailed instructions for how museum staff should put together each of his mural or sculpture. In a way, I felt like I was engaging in a small part of his work's intention, even if it was a much simpler version.
Conceptualizing the Kit & Prepping the Files
Since I'm still getting used to Fusion360, I found it difficult to align all the pieces correctly to demonstrate how the construction would work. This time, I got away with moving the pieces myself and fudging the joints, but I anticipate needing to nail this down in future weeks. However, I was able to sketch enough to cut my pieces. Initially, I adjusted for the laser cut kerf by adding 0.5mm to my notch parameter. After the first set of cuts, I realized I actually needed to do the opposite. My pieces weren't fitting quite right because there was too much space.
Final Press Kit Construction
I adjusted my files by removing the 0.5mm from my notch parameter, which was easy since I determined those lengths parametrically. When cutting this new set of pieces, I played around with different potential constructions, which you can see below. With more time, I would like to make a more advanced press kit, while maintaing the constrainy that every piece is the same size and shape.
3D-Modeling Household Objects
Nalgene Water Bottle
I found several existing models of Nalgenes online, which gave me inspiration about how to proceed with this exercise. However, I poked around for a simpler cylinder/bottle tutorial to start out.
